Astronomy is the scientific study of the Universe and the bodies within it. If you have ever wanted to be an astronaut, conduct research in a major observatory, help NASA explore the planets, teach science at any level, or just want to learn more about our Universe, astronomy is the place to begin. SRJC astronomy courses are for both the science and nonscience major. Lecture and lab courses satisfy the Physical Science transfer requirement for both the UC and CSU system. Students have gone on to major in the fields of physics, astrophysics, planetary geology, and cosmology.
Santa Rosa Junior College has a variety of resources and equipment to enhance Astronomy courses. We have a planetarium that lets students explore the night sky regardless of the time of day or weather, and we have more than 20 telescopes that are used in our laboratory courses.
At Santa Rosa Junior College, we offer the following Astronomy courses:
A study of the evolution and properties of stars, extra solar planets, black holes, galaxies, and cosmology.
This lab involves the analysis of astronomical data concerning stars, nebulae, and galaxies.
A study of the Sun, planets, asteroids, comets, and the history of Astronomy.
This lab involves the analysis of astronomical data concerning planets, satellites, comets, and other Solar System phenomena.
A combined lecture and lab course teaching the techniques used to gather astronomical data along with the study of the Sun, planets, asteroids, comets, and history of Astronomy from the Greeks through the Copernican Revolution.
An observational laboratory that involves the use of telescopes, binoculars, and star charts, constellation identification, terrestrial and celestial coordinate systems, short exposure and deep sky astrophotography.
